One of the many ways to design your home without spending money is to develop some creativity. You can start to look around for creative ways to open up your view. Of course there is a catch. Well, not exactly a catch. You can become a thrifty and crafty homemaker. There are some simple tricks to make your decorating ideas reality.

1. Use Free Sources

I started with free DIY home decor inspiration. I took lots of pictures and made a lot of notes carefully documenting my findings. Then I started to interpret the images, and at this point, I was actually making mental images for the rooms in my house.

This was really helpful for my energy, which is key when creating your home. If you are uplifted, you will be more motivated to start working on your home.

These free sources of inspiration will also show you different ideas and help you expand your creative thinking. You will be able to see lots of details that will help you think of ways to get creative with your home when it comes to creating your vision.

To give you an interesting example, I personally love cozy bedrooms, especially traditional ones, and I got lots of nice ideas for creating a cozy bedroom from these sources of inspiration. I also saw the different details that were used to create the cozy look, and hence I had a better understanding of how to approach the creation of my fantasy bedroom as well.

The bonus is that some of these sites are fun to surf on their own. I love browsing these sites on my mobile while I am still in bed in the morning. Because they have slow-loading images, they don't hurt my eyes, and they are also quite inspiring. It’s the best way to start the morning!

2. Front Door/Entry

Whether you’re greeting friends or family, or you’re just running out for a quick errand, this is the first thing people see when they arrive at your home.

So make sure it looks nice. Same as for the rest of your home, there’s a massive choice of HD photographs, art prints and canvases, so you can definitely find something nice and affordable to brighten up your entryway.

There are also fresh flowers, sprays or plants to place in a vase or container, which can give your the entrance a colorful and inviting touch.

3. Decorate with Jewelry

The thing about having a house that looks like you are in a magazine is the money you spend on getting it looking that way. That is the number one thing people pay attention to when you walk into a room. Your house should portray your lifestyle and taste in a tasteful way. You can customize your house without spending thousands of dollars.

Choose things that you already have that match your house or maybe your just starting out and don’t have a lot of money to spend. Decorate with what you have.

Take a long look at what you have and be surprised. Maybe you have more jewelry than you thought you had. Maybe you have books you collected that are old and valuable. Look at what you have that can be artistic or vintage and use that.

When it comes to how to decorate your home, use anything you can think of that you already have. Use your creativity. You may even use your old jewelry to decorate your home. You don’t have to have anything brand new to decorate.

Even if you want to purchase something new for your house and for entertaining, look on Craig's list or any free newspaper type of ads you may have. There is so much of what’s considered excellent out there today that are cost-cutter or has already been owned.

4. Fruit Decoration

The best part about fruit is that they are natural and free to create decorations. Have you ever thought of creating something creative with fruit?

Fruit can be used for decoration in a lot of creative ways. It’s not as hard as you might think. Give it a try! Here are some ideas for you.

Twist Some Citrus Fruits

You can use any citrus fruit for decoration. Oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits are the options you have. I usually use lemons and limes because they are the most decorative and easiest to find in my refrigerator. First, you need to decide how you want to decorate your fruit. You can create a bow tie, a flower, a crown (really cute for girls!), a cupcake, a hat…

Start cutting your peels to make it look like a bow tie, a flower petal or the shape that you want. You can make different shapes of your fruit. When you come up with a design you like, stick them together using toothpicks and wrap aluminum foil around it to hold it in shape. Add some flowers and greenery to make it look more beautiful.

Color Code Books

Do you have a messy, jam-packed bookshelf? If so, you’re not alone. Most homes have at least one overflowing bookshelf. The secret to tidier and neater bookshelves is color coding. First, sort the books by color. Choose a light, medium and dark shade of one color and start stacking the books together. This simple trick will instantly make your bookshelves look more organized. It also helps categorize books by topics so you can easily find the book you’re looking for. For example, keeping books on photography together and books on gardening together; and so on.

Your Bathroom Accessorie s

Sure, there are a lot of accessories for your bathroom but you can save on them without very much cost.

Feel free to use some of the great stuff you can find in your house or around the neighborhood. You can use a magazine holder for your towel and toilet paper, plastic containers for your shampoo and conditioner and you can use little baskets or well-protected plastic boxes to place your cotton balls, cotton pads or other items.

Also feel free to use baskets for your children’s bath time. They can hang them on the wall or they can be useful if you replace the towel with a rope and put them on the ground. Just make sure that the rope is safe and doesn’t have anything that can hurt your child.

Something also to consider is to read the labels on your skincare and body care products. Try to read on the ingredients and if they contain something that can damage your bathroom (like water), then you should do your best to find products that don’t contain harmful ingredients. And if you can’t, then create a separate area on your bathroom that isn’t used for anything else but products that are safe for your bathroom.

Find a neat store that has everything you want or prefer a discount stores such as Ross, Marshall’s, or TJ Maxx, you are going to find a lot of great stuff for your house. It is important to keep your eyes open for deals, even when you are shopping for vintage.

9. Display Pictures

Some ways you can show off the memories are to place them in a large family photo album, in a scrapbook, in a wall-hanging photo album, in scrapbooking albums or in photo-frames. You can display at least a few in each room and update the photos as the years pass by.

You can also put these photos into a collage. There are plenty of collage ideas available to display.

Another way to decorate your home, without spending too much, is to use antique accessories. Look for the things, which have an antique look but have not been used for many years. You can get these beautiful priceless accessories at a local flea market or via an online auction. You can display these on shelves with porcelain or wooden figurines, antique books and decorative pieces. You can create a miniature gallery in a corner of a room and add touches of cultures or natural landscape.

Besides these things, you can also use fixtures and lighting. Choose fixtures, which add to the look of your home. Candles, lamps and wall sconces can add a warm glow to your home. You can find these things that look antique, but are definitely not when you are at flea markets or antique shops.

Give Your Furniture a New Look

We all have that piece of furniture that we do not use but cannot get rid of. So a cheap way to gain some extra furniture in your house without spending too much money is to convert the un-used into the useful.

For example, when you have a huge cabinet that you don't use, don't just throw it away. Instead, repurpose it by creating a children's play area / loft or a shelf.

You can decorate desks and tables in interesting ways. You can find hundreds of repurposed furniture pieces on online sources like Pinterest or YouTube. These furniture pieces are cheaper than new pieces but they can also serve as a decorative piece as well. They can also reduce clutter in your home.

There are tons of ways to gain furniture without having to buy a thing. When you look around your house, you can find ways to repurpose things in fun and interesting ways. It is a fun and budget friendly way to decorate your house. It will also help you clear up some space and declutter your home.

Recycling Activities

There is always a need to shop at department and furniture stores to find the stuff you love and probably didn't know in advance. But you don't always have to!

That's why I call this the ultimate secret because turning your house into a model apartment is possible just by recycling the things you want to leave behind and that no one else wants.

I recently overheard from a group of friends who have removed all the furniture from their home and are changing the theme/decorations of every room drastically.

So, now I want to tell you about my good friend who's moving to a new home too. In fact, everyone is moving out and talking about moving. My friend Monalisa is moving out to the United States to be closer to her family and friends.

She's a working professional in India, and is renting an apartment as well. The landlord has given her some time to find new tenants. But, she doesn't want to wait for a new apartment.

She's moving out from her landlord's apartment and he has agreed to let her have the entire apartment since she was loyal to him and was a good tenant. It was a win-win situation! But, she had no furniture in the first place.

13. Jar Vases

A jar can do so much more than just hold your peanut butter, rice, or pickles.

You can turn it into a vase, a catch-all, or even a wind chime.

You can dress it up with stickers, fabric, or paint.

No two jars ever have to be the same because you can customize them any way you want.

What you need to make a jar into a vase:

  • Jar
  • Ribbons or Raffia
  • Floral Foam
  • Thread
  • Ribbon Scissors

How to turn a jar into a vase:

First take a jar of any shape or size.

Then cut strips of floral foam that fit into the jar.

Take a strip of floral foam, place the bottom of the jar inside, then push the foam down the sides, and then just hold it in the center inside of the jar.

Starting from the top, thread the foam with the ribbons, tied back to the strings of the ribbons, which are then wrapped around the jar until the whole jar is covered by the ribbons.

Final Thoughts

The perfect home is a place that reflects and holds your personality and style. It can be as elaborate as you want it to be, with decorations and collections or as simple as you want it to be, with just one piece that sticks out, rather than being your one and only piece. The main thing in terms of decoration is to stay on budget and tailor your design to your lifestyle and preferences.

There are some steps you can take to be able to decorate your home without spending a dime:

{1}. Start collecting free items with sentimental or simply functional value.
{2}. Prioritize your space – the more will-fill, the more you can add.
{3}. Re-invent, don’t replace – use vintage items in your handcrafted home.
{4}. Go for vintage whenever you can, it will always save you money.
{5}. Don’t be intimidated by the thought of re-purposing, virtually any of your furniture can be restyled.
